HISTORICAL BACK GROUND
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences previously, College of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the eleven faculties of the University of Nairobi.
The name change was instituted when the University underwent the five-point reform agenda in 2021.The College of Humanities and Social Sciences was divided intro four faculties: The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Business and Management SCience.
The Faculty of Social Sciences has 14 Departments:-
Philosophy and Religious Studies
Library and Information Science
Economics and Development Studies
Sociology, Social Work and African Women Studies
Political Science and Public Administration
Anthropology, Gender and African Studies
Journalism & Mass Communication
Diplomacy and International Studies
Geography, Population and Environmental Studies
The mandate of the Faculty is to coordinate the implementation of University policies and programmes in the humanities and social sciences.
Milestones
- The College was established in 1985
- The College introduced self sponsored programmes in 1998
- The College opened its satellite campus in Mombasa in 2005 and Kisumu in 2007
- Distance Learning (Module III) was launched in the Faculty of Arts and School of Business in 2007
- The College was divided into four faculties in 2021
