The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) today, Wednesday, August 20, 2025, held its orientation for first-year students at Taifa Hall from 9:30 a.m. The event was marked by warmth, encouragement, and valuable guidance as the new students were officially welcomed into the faculty community.
The orientation brought together the entire faculty leadership and staff. Present were the Dean, Prof. Jack Odhiambo, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Prof. Jennifer Muchiri, the Registrar of the Faculty, as well as chairpersons from all the 14 departments. Each chairperson took the opportunity to introduce their department, outline academic expectations, and extend support to the new students.
In his keynote address, Prof. Odhiambo congratulated the students for joining the University of Nairobi and welcomed them to the largest faculty in the institution. “You are joining a faculty that has produced leaders and professionals who continue to serve Kenya and the world. In four years, we expect you to add to this proud legacy,” he said.
He urged the students to uphold discipline, integrity, and responsibility both in and out of class. He also advised them to use their time and resources wisely, avoid harmful behaviors such as drug abuse and violence, and remain committed to their academic and personal growth. “Your parents, guardians, and the Kenyan society at large have invested in you. Protect your future by making the right choices,” he emphasized.
The Dean highlighted the vibrant academic environment within FASS, which is home to 14 diverse departments: Political Science and Public Administration; Philosophy and Religious Studies; History and Archaeology; Sociology and African Women Studies; Linguistics and Languages; Kiswahili; Geography, Population and Environmental Studies; Psychology; Literature; Diplomacy and International Studies; Journalism and Mass Communication; Anthropology, Gender and African Studies; Library and Information Science; and Economics and Development Studies.
He further reminded the students of the support available through the Office of the Assistant Dean of Students, faculty counsellors, and the University Wellness Centre. These, he noted, are designed to ensure that students thrive not only academically but also socially and emotionally.
The Registrar of the Faculty, together with the department chairs and other staff members, the Dean of student, Mr Kinyua also addressed the gathering. They encouraged the students to take advantage of the many opportunities offered by the faculty, assuring them of the staff’s full support throughout their academic journey.
The orientation left the first-year students with a clear sense of belonging, direction, and encouragement as they embark on their studies at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
