DECOLONIZATION AND ITS LEGACIES IN PORTUGUESE-SPEAKING AFRICA. BY PROF ANTONIO COSTA PINTO-UNIVERSITY OF LISBON

Wednesday, on the 15th of May 2024, the Department of Diplomacy and International Studies at the University of Nairobi hosted Professor Antonio Costa Pinto from Lusofana University Lisbon, who delivered a keynote lecture on "Decolonization and Its Legacies in Portuguese-Speaking Africa."

The event took place in Room MLT 405 of the University of Nairobi Towers from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. Professor Antonio was accompanied by Her Excellency Anna Filomena Rocha and other Portuguese dignitaries. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stephen Kiama, and the Dean, Professor Jack Odhiambo, who were represented by Dr Martin Oleche Chair department of economics and development studies, conveyed their congratulations to Mr. Pinto for gracing the occasion and delivering the keynote lecture, especially in this significant year as Portugal celebrated the 50th anniversary of their Carnation Revolution and freedom on April 25th, 2024.

Professor Antonio Costa Pinto discussed the process of decolonization in Portuguese-speaking African countries and its lasting impacts. He delved into historical, political, social, and economic aspects of decolonization in Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and São Tomé and Príncipe, exploring how the end of colonial rule shaped these nations and their trajectories post-independence. He mentioned various factors such as liberation movements, the role of colonial powers, struggles for independence, and the challenges faced by these countries in the post-colonial era.

Dr. Patrick Maluki, Chair and Director of the Department, was impressed by the visit of the Portuguese delegation and the dedication of Professor Pinto in delivering the keynote speech. He also commended that the Department of Diplomacy and International Studies at the University of Nairobi has produced over 80% of diplomats in Kenya, and the department currently has 120 PhD students, making it the largest department in the university with a significant number of PhD candidates.
