UoN Set to Bolster Global Ties with University of Warwick
The University of Nairobi (UoN) is moving to formalize a robust academic partnership with the University of Warwick, aiming to enhance research, faculty exchange, and student mobility across the African continent.
In a high-level consultative meeting held on February 24, 2026, at the School of Arts and Social Sciences boardroom, leadership from both institutions outlined a roadmap for a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The discussions centered on transitioning long-standing informal ties into a structured, multi-disciplinary collaboration.
The meeting, chaired by Prof. Jack Odhiambo, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, focused on bridging gaps in previous agreements. Prof. Odhiambo emphasized the urgency of formalizing cooperation in key niche areas, including: Literature and Humanities, Language and Linguistics, African History and Gender Studies and Comprehensive Student Exchange Programs
Representing the University of Warwick, Professor Daniel Branch, Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor (Africa), unveiled three immediate programs designed to support UoN’s academic community: Visiting PhD Fellowships Support for up to three PhD researchers to conduct advanced research at the University of Warwick. International Partnership Fund Dedicated funding to facilitate joint seminars and workshops. Advanced Staff Exchange Support for professors and faculty members through structured exchange programs.
The University of Nairobi’s Registrar, Dr. Peter Wekesa, highlighted the institution's deep expertise in African History and expressed a strong interest in collaborating with Warwick to boost performance in Gender Studies and African Women Studies. Prof. Branch confirmed that Warwick possesses a specialized team ready to assist in these critical areas.
The meeting concluded with a resolution to draft a comprehensive MoU. While the initial focus remains on the Arts and Social Sciences, the agreement is designed to be inclusive, remaining open for other faculties within the University of Nairobi to join in the future.
The Registrar’s office and the Directorate of Corporate Affairs are currently compiling a list of upcoming conferences and existing programs to be integrated into the formal agreement.
