Today, on May 9th, 2024, the Department of Diplomacy and International Studies at the University of Nairobi held a conference titled 'Youth for Future: Meaningful Representation and Participation' at University of Nairobi Towers, Room 401. The event aimed to facilitate a conversation on empowering young people to have a voice in global decision-making processes and shaping the future of democracy to ensure that the perspectives and concerns of young generations are heard and taken into account.
The event was attended by esteemed guests, including Former Mayor and Prime Minister (2014-2015) of Mali, His Excellency Moussa Mara, Nathaniel Mong’are from the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association (KYPA), Josephine Mwangi, Program Manager at International IDEA, Yvonne Wamucii, Office of the Presidential Advisor on Digital Economy, Mary Yvonne Odadah, Youth Cafe, Director/Chair of the Department, Dr. Patrick Maluki, and Dean of the Faculty, Professor Jack Odhiombo, alongside students and other participants.
In his welcoming remarks Dean Prof Jack Odhiambo, rep by Dr Maluki emphasized that democracy is not merely a system of governance but a covenant of collective responsibility ensuring that every voice is heard and every perspective considered in the pursuit of a common good.” it is incumbent upon us, as educators, policy makers, diplomats, and leaders, to address this challenge head-on for it is only through empowering our youth, by providing them with the platforms, resources, and support they need, that we can truly safeguard and strengthen the foundations of democracy”
His Excellency Moussa Mara, who served as Prime Minister from 2014 to 2015, shared his remarkable journey into politics during his youth. He recounted how, at the age of 34, he ascended to the position of mayor, and by the age of 39, he had achieved the prestigious role of Prime Minister of Mali. His story is a testament to his dedication, perseverance, and leadership qualities, inspiring many to pursue their aspirations in the realm of politics. He further noted that "Democracy extends beyond elections, encompassing accountability, transparency, interaction, and trust between leaders and people".
Nathaniel Mong’are talked on the pivotal role of youth in political discourse. He underscored the importance of harnessing the energy, creativity, and aspirations of young people to shape a better tomorrow. He highlighted the need for inclusive policies that empower youth to actively participate in decision-making processes, ensuring their voices are heard and valued. The parliamentarian stressed that investing in youth political engagement is not only essential for sustainable development but also for fostering a more inclusive and democratic society.
Other speakers also emphasized the importance of empowering our youth and encouraging them to advocate for their place in democracy, shaping the future of their lives."
The conference concluded with a plenary session followed by a question-and-answer segment moderated by Stephen Nyaga.
