LASEMA Nigeria Benchmark with UoN

The University of Nairobi welcomed a high-level delegation from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nigeria, for a courtesy and benchmarking visit on migration studies and institutional development. Hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the engagement brought together the Dean, Prof. Jack Odhiambo; the Associate Dean, Prof. Jennifer Muchiri; the Kenya Institute of Migration Studies (KIMS), Coordinator, Dr. Gabriel Lubale; the Ag. Chairman of the Department of Geography, Population and Environmental Studies, Dr. Kennedy Omoke; and representatives from the Directorate of Immigration Services, the National Disaster Operations Center, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The discussions explored innovative academic and institutional models that integrate migration, disaster management, peace, and security. Participants also highlighted KIMS' achievements in training more than 200 professionals from nine African countries and its vision of expanding postgraduate programmes to meet emerging regional needs through Master's and Doctoral programmes.

The visit concluded on a high note, with participants expressing optimism about future collaboration between the University of Nairobi, KIMS, LASEMA, and IOM. Assistant Director Alice Mburu described the reception as "warm," while IOM's Ms. Fatuma Mohamed termed the engagement "indeed a fruitful" exchange. The delegation also toured the University campus, the KIMS Lecture Room, and the Coordinator's Office. At the close of the visit, LASEMA Permanent Secretary and Chief Executive, Dr. Damilola Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, invited the University of Nairobi delegation to undertake a reciprocal benchmarking visit to Lagos, assuring the hosts: "We promise to show you around Lagos on your return benchmarking visit to Nigeria." The visit reinforced the growing partnership between Kenya and Nigeria in advancing migration governance, disaster preparedness, research, and professional capacity building.
