The Canada High Commission in Kenya had a diplomatic and academic engagement at the University of Nairobi, bringing together senior dignitaries from Canada and Kenya to discuss bilateral cooperation with a strong emphasis on migration policies, education pathways, and people-to-people ties. The forum, held at the University’s main campus, reaffirmed the deep and evolving relationship between the two countries, particularly in the areas of human trafficking, migration mobility and Canada being a co-host of 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The UN High Commissioner to Kenya and Ambassador to Somalia Joshua Tabah who gave the symbolic significance of holding the dialogue at the University of Nairobi, describing the institution as a meeting point of ideas, leadership, and future global citizens directly on issues shaping their futures, including migration, education, and global partnerships.

 Speaking at the forum, Professor Leonidah Kerubo who represented The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi highlighted the institution’s role in shaping migration research and innovation through academic collaboration. She noted that partnerships with Canadian universities contribute to evidence-based policymaking on migration, border management, diaspora studies, and integration frameworks. Professor Leonidah insisted that migration remains a central pillar of Canada–Kenya relations. “Canada’s immigration system is built on fairness, opportunity, and economic contribution, together with Kenyan students, professionals, and entrepreneurs continue to make significant contributions to Canada’s social and economic fabric.” She added.

The High esteemed meeting brought forth a panel that outlined Canada and Kenya’s migration framework, highlighting pathways for international students, skilled workers, caregivers, and solution to migration issues. Particular attention was given to legal pathways to attain citizenship including post-graduation work permits and permanent residency options, which have seen growing interest among Kenyan youth. The Officials also addressed measures being taken to ensure integrity, transparency, and protection against misinformation and exploitation in the migration process.

During the panel discussion Kenyan dignitaries welcomed Canada’s continued openness to Kenyan migrants while emphasizing the need for ethical and mutually beneficial migration policies. The Principle Secretary of State Labour and Skills development Shadrack Mwadime, noted that Kenya views migration not only as a labor and education opportunity, but also as a development tool through skills transfer, remittances, and diaspora engagement. He called for deeper cooperation on labor mobility agreements, recognition of qualifications, and protection of migrant rights.

Dr Harpreet S. Kochhar Deputy Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) also addressed global and regional migration challenges, including forced displacement, refugee protection, and climate-induced migration. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to international humanitarian principles, with Canada recognizing Kenya’s role as a major refugee-hosting nation in the region. Isaiya Kabira Secretary for Diaspora Investments, Skills, and Entrepreneurship in Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and The Canadian representatives reiterated their support for Kenya’s education, resettlement programs, and host community development initiatives. The Canadian representatives highlighted the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, as an opportunity for global mobility, cultural exchange, and economic growth. Officials noted that the tournament is expected to create opportunities in infrastructure development, tourism, hospitality, security, media, and event management.

The forum concluded with a shared commitment to sustained dialogue on migration and mobility as strategic drivers of development and innovation. The engagement at the University of Nairobi was widely viewed as a timely and constructive platform for advancing Canada–Kenya cooperation, ensuring safe, orderly, and regular migration while empowering youth and strengthening bilateral ties.
