On June 14, 2023, the University of Nairobi Department of Linguistics and Languages requested the support of the League of Arab States in strengthening its capacity to teach the Arabic language.

During a meeting led by Alfred Buregeya, the Chair Department of Linguistics and Languages, department staff engaged in discussions with a team from the League of Arab States. The purpose of the meeting was to identify the difficulties encountered by the Arabic section and propose suitable intervention measures. Mr. Buregeya warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed his anticipation that this meeting would mark the beginning of a long-term relationship.

Dr. Abdulmajid Akidah, the coordinator of Arabic studies at the university, highlighted the history of the Arabic sections, their academic programs, and the number of staff and students involved.

He also shared challenges faced by the department, including insufficient staff, a lack of teaching books and reference materials as staff rely on personal libraries and unpublished teaching modules, the lack of  capacity to launch the Arabic program at the Faculty of Education, and the lack of a laboratory to support the teaching of Arabic to non-native speakers.

In response, the Department of Linguistics and Languages expressed its need for support from the League of Arab States. Specifically requesting assistance in employing qualified lecturers, establishing a modern language laboratory equipped with necessary resources, sponsoring a workshop to revise the current Arabic certificate and supporting the process of establishing an Arabic section within the Faculty of Education.
