European Commission to Sponsor Centre for Translation and Interpretation

The European Commission will expand its sponsorship to the Centre for Translation and Interpretation (CTI).  This was revealed during a meeting between Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Mbithi and Mr. Carlos Alegra, Director General for Interpretation and Conferences (DGSCIC).

Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Alegra said the EU had set aside 4 million dollars to promote the development of high quality human capacity. He said the EU will further support the Center for Translation and Interpretation in terms of scholarships, student and staff exchange programs, purchasing of new equipment and facilitating Trainer of Trainer Sessions.

CTI was established following a collaboration between the University of Nairobi, the United Nations and the European Union with the mandate to train translators, conference and community interpreters within the African region.

On his part, Prof. Mbithi thanked the European Commission and the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) for their support in training interpreters and translators across the region. He said that the University is committed to ensuring the objectives of the partnership are realized.Going forward, it was agreed that project cooperation will be signed to enable smooth operation of the agreement.

Also present during the meeting were, Prof. Henry Mutoro, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Enos Njeru, Principal, CHSS and Prof. Jane Mutiga, Director, CTI.
